Fighter jets were scrambled today because two Russian military aircraft were spotted approaching British airspace. Twitter got a bit aerated about this. So did various news agencies. Hard to see why, really, seeing as
“RAF fighter planes were scrambled to incidents such as this eight times last year, an MOD spokesman said.”
Huh. So why has this particular incident got so much attention? Perhaps it was unusual or there was a specific threat?
“The Russian military aircraft remained in international airspace at all times as they are perfectly entitled to do so.
The spokesman added that Russian military flights have never entered UK sovereign airspace without authorisation.”
Hmm. So why the song and dance about it? Because the planes were spotted off the coast of Scotland. It may have escaped your notice but we have a referendum coming up, up here. The cynical part of me thought, as soon as I read about the RAF jets being scrambled to chase off the Russki planes, that this is all a big manufactured scare tactic on behalf of Westminster. ‘Look! See the dangerous pugnacious commies! How will you ever protect yourselves from them without our massive military unionist flypower, eh? Vote Naw!’
And if that seems like ridiculous tinfoil-hattery, have a look at this.
I await the next overblown scary story to terrify the children with with interest. Still voting Yes though.
